Play Outline: The Gruffalo


Title

The Gruffalo.

Synopsis
The mouse goes for a walk in the forest and on his way he encounters dangerous animals. Each of these animals tries to eat the mouse. He tells each animal that he is going to meet with a gruffalo (a fictional monster).

The mouse is shocked to encounter a real gruffalo who tries to eat him. The mouse tries to convince the gruffalo that he is the scariest animal in the forest.

Finally “the mouse find a nut and the nut was good”.

Character objectives

The mouse: a small mouse who is very clever and imaginative.

The Fox: he lives in an underground house and he wants to eat the mouse.

The Owl: he lives in the treetop house and he pretends to eat the mouse.

The Snake: he lives in the logpile house and he wants to eat the mouse.

The Gruffalo: he is a big terrible creature. His features terrify everyone.

Scene 1

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse is walking through the forest when he meets the fox. The fox invites him to have lunch. The mouse declines the invitation because he planned to meet with the gruffalo.

Scene 2

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse is walking through the forest when he meets the owl. The owl invites him to have tea. The mouse declines the invitation because he agreed to meet with the gruffalo.

Scene 3

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse is walking through the forest when he meets the snake. The snake invites him to have feast. The mouse declines the invitation because he arranged to meet with the gruffalo.

Scene 4

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse finds the gruffalo. The gruffalo wants to eat the mouse but he says that he is the scariest creature in the forest. The gruffalo follows him to test it.

Scene 5

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse and the gruffalo meet with the snake. The snake runs away when he sees the gruffalo.

Scene 6

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse and the gruffalo meet with the owl. The owl flees when he sees the gruffalo.

Scene 7

Music and genre: Peter and the Wolf.

The mouse and the gruffalo meet with the fox. The fox runs away when he sees the gruffalo.

Scene 8

The gruffalo is afraid because he things that the mouse is the scariest creature in the forest. The gruffalo flees through the forest. The mouse finds a nut and he eats it.

Extra information

The story has some repetitive structures that students learn very easy by just listening to them:

“A gruffalo? What´s a gruffalo?” “A gruffalo! Why, didn´t you know?”
